Salone Events; A Goodwood Story

When Salone Events started in June 2018, a strong relationship formed between ourselves and Goodwood. We have an affinity with Goodwood. So it is easy to understand why we hosted our first ever track day there.

The Salone Events Story: 

I have some very strong memories that I hold very close to my heart when it comes to Goodwood. In fact, the reason I started Salone Events is in part down to my fond memories of Goodwood. 

When I hear the name Goodwood, I think of it as a home from home. My Grandad (Papa) raced at the circuit many times and was a long-standing member of the GRRC. It has always played a big role in our family, so much so that we held Papa’s funeral reception there. The wake included a parade lap and his racing attire was encased in glass by Goodwood staff. They really went above and beyond – as always! It was a defining moment for me, I realised Goodwood really is a special place. A fitting memory that will last a lifetime. 

My affinity with the Goodwood Estate and the racing blood that is in my family, certainly ignited my passion for all things automotive. My experience set the foundations from which I built my business. I have always wanted to work in the events industry, and with Salone Events I have the ability to combine two passions.

Goodwood History

I love learning facts about the history of the iconic Goodwood motor circuit. Such as Freddie March, (Grandfather to the current Duke of Richmond) caught such a passion for motor racing that he went undercover to work for W.O Bentley. He wanted to learn more about cars, he was eventually found out by the other mechanics. He was approached by a friend Squadron Leader, Tony Gaze after the second world war who suggested that he turned the aerodrome perimeter into a motor circuit. As an amateur racing driver, he leapt at the opportunity, and opened the track in 1948 to some 15,000 spectators. The track then ran for almost 20 years before it closed in 1966 due to the rejection of plans that were set to change the track, to suit the increasing speeds of the modern race cars. However, the track remained a test facility until it’s reopening in 1998 by the current Duke of Richmond at what is now known as the Goodwood Revival, an annual festival. 

I have always loved the quote that came from Roy Salvadori, as I feel it really hits the nail on the head: “Give me Goodwood on a summer’s day and you can forget the rest”. This resonates with so many who have had the pleasure of attending such spectacles. 

Goodwood Motor Circuit is known for being a fast circuit with very little room for error. It has even claimed the greatest racing drivers in history. One such unfortunate driver was Sir Stirling Moss who crashed at St Mary’s Corner which ended his professional racing career. 

The Goodwood track is 2.4 miles of pure ecstasy, set within a stunning English country estate. It boasts a wealth of facilities and events. Despite its luxurious and sporting lineage the whole estate has a social and family atmosphere. A combination that you just can’t get anywhere else. If I were to recommend a day out to anyone it would definitely be at Goodwood, there is something for everyone. Including Salone Events track days and ultimate experience packages!
