The ultimate car should – be able to do multiple things right? Be a good daily drive, feel comfortable and special, be lightning fast on the track and even go off road! Ok the last one is going too far for most track day cars but let’s assess the other criteria for the ultimate track weapon.
There are too many cars to name that I would love to have a go in around the track. McLaren 600LT and the Ariel Atom for sure! But there are two cars that stick out for me that are seen as the pinnacle of their respective manufacturers, the Porsche GT3 RS and Ferrari 488 Pista.
There is no denying that these two cars are great contenders for the ultimate track weapon and definitely stand out due to their limited numbers.
The Porsche GT3RS
I have been a passenger in one of these around the Goodwood Motor Circuit. I had to hold my breath in all the breaking zones with my feet pinned to the floor as the car handles incredibly. The Porsche 911 has always stuck to the trademark Flat Six engine dating back to 1963 when it was first introduced. The latest GT3RS variant has a whopping 520hp and 346 lb-ft of torque which is enough to propel it from 0-60 in 3 seconds dead. There is nothing that sounds quite like a Porsche and who doesn’t like a big rear wing to control all that performance. I love the range of colours from Porsche’s exclusive range; an ultraviolet edition can often be found blasting around at our track day in all its glory. It is effectively a track car for the road, bailing the rear seats for a roll cage gives it that proper race car feel.
Ferrari 488 Pista
The successor to the original 488 the Pista is exquisite showing the true nature of the prancing horse. The most powerful V8 Ferrari has ever produced is a badge of honour that very few people can say “I own the keys to”. We know one lucky owner, a beloved client and frequent attendee of Salone Events track days. The twin turbo pushes the boundaries of what should be possible giving this car 710bhp and 568lb-ft of torque. Giving it a 0-60 time of 2.85 seconds. Pista literally translates from Italian as track so this car was literally developed for track fun. Ferrari never ceases to captivate, luxury cars with performance quality to match, the Pista is surely the poster-board dream.
Who would win in this epic head to head? The 488 Pista or the GT3RS? The figures point towards the Ferrari, but I reckon the Porsche would be better in the corners, with more aero it has rip-your-face-off grip. If it comes to looks, I think the Ferrari wins on pure flare and curves but on stance the Porsche wins hands down.
